George Steinmetz

Contributing Photographer, National Geographic Magazine

George Steinmetz is a regular contributor to National Geographic magazine, examining subjects ranging from global oil exploration and the latest advances in robotics to remote stretches of the Sahara Desert and the little-known tree house people of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. Since his first assignment for National Geographic in 1987, Steinmetz has completed more than 20 assignments for the magazine—many of them shot from the seat of his paraglider--including three cover stories.  His story about Brazil’s northeastern coastal dunes appears in the July 2010 issue.  Steinmetz has won numerous awards for photography during his career, including two first prizes in science and technology in 1995 and 1998 from World Press Photo. He has also won awards and citations from Pictures of the Year, Overseas Press Club, and the Alfred Eisenstaedt Awards.
