John Stanmeyer

Photographer, National Geographic

John Stanmeyer is a founding member of the VII photo agency. While living in the Far East he witnessed many major historical events and photographed the rapid changes taking place throughout the region. Working globally, he has focused on refugees of the Ugandan civil war, the effects of the 2004 tsunami, conflict in South Sudan, Eastern European social change after the fall of Communism, and endless social tragedies in Haiti. He began his career as a fashion photographer in Italy but turned his camera toward social injustices and the rights of people who cannot help themselves. On contract with Time magazine since 1998, he works regularly for National Geographic and other publications and has received many honors and awards, including the 2008 National Magazine Award for his in-depth essay on the global malaria epidemic.
