Alcinda Antonio de Abreu is Minister for the Coordination of Environmental Affairs in Mozambique. Previously, she held various other national leadership positions, including Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and Minister for the Coordination of Social Welfare. A Member of Parliament for 17 years, before independence she joined the liberation war and was a commander of the Female Detachment Center. For many years she was a youth leader, an activist for women and human rights, and one of the founding leaders of Women in Law and Development in Africa, based in Harare. Her educational background on gender and development has helped her train hundreds of Mozambican office staff on gender-mainstreaming.
