Sylvia Earle is explorer in residence at the National Geographic Society and a marine scientist long active in deep ocean exploration and scientific expeditions around the world. An outspoken advocate of undersea research whose books and films have raised public awareness of environmental degradation and pollution damage to the aquasphere, she has spent thousands of hours under water. She is the founder of two companies that design and build undersea vehicles, and she has also served as chief scientist of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, where she was responsible for monitoring the health of the nation's waters.
