Joel Bourne is a contributing writer for National Geographic, where as a senior editor for the environment he covered major environmental issues, including oil exploration on Alaska's North Slope, the push for biofuels, Louisiana’s wetlands, and the future of New Orleans. His stories in the national media have included reporting on the results of the only oil well drilled in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the weaknesses in New Orleans' rebuilt hurricane protection system. Most recently, he was an editor and essayist for National Geographic's special issue on climate change. He has also written for National Geographic Adventure, National Geographic Traveler, Audubon, Science, Outside, and many other publications.
