Chris Johns

Editor in Chief, National Geographic Magazine

As editor in chief of National Geographic magazine, Chris Johns is leading the magazine's transformation into digital publishing, overseeing both the print edition of the magazine and the award-winning digital version with a focus on telling memorable stories in unforgettable ways.  Under his leadership, the magazine has won numerous accolades, including 15 National Magazine Awards, and in 2008 Johns was named Editor of the Year by Advertising Magazine. In 2009, he created an editorial team focused on environmental coverage and has championed reporting that puts into context the energy and environmental challenges facing people around the planet. Before becoming editor in chief, he was a field photographer for more than 20 years. Johns photographed more than 20 articles for National Geographic and produced books on the Hawaii Islands, Africa's Rift Valley, and wildlife issues in southern Africa.
